What Are Press On Nails?

According to nail artist Braelinn Frank, press on nails are acrylic resin false nails that can be applied within minutes and closely resemble a professional acrylic manicure.

Press-on nails are pre-designed, ready-to-wear nails that are glued directly onto your natural nails. They come in a wide variety of shapes, colors, and styles, from minimalist looks to bold nail art and are available at different price points.

How Do Press-On Nails Work?

Press-on nails are designed for quick and easy application. Each kit typically includes a set of nails, nail glue, a file, and a cuticle pusher. The nails are sorted into five groups, each containing multiple sizes so that you can find the perfect fit for every finger. If a nail doesn't match exactly, you can shape it with the file for a precise fit.

How Long Do Press-On Nails Last?

With proper care and application, press-on nails typically last up to two weeks. Their longevity depends on factors such as nail preparation, glue quality, and your daily activities.

As Glamnetic founder Ann McFerran explains, "Preparation and the amount of glue applied are crucial for making press-on nails last." Taking a few extra minutes to prep your nails properly can help your manicure stay secure and flawless for days longer.

Can Press-On Nails Be Reused?

Yes press-on nails can be reused if they are made from a strong, durable material and removed gently. According to nail artist Braelinn Frank, β€œMore glue equals longer wear," meaning that nails applied with a thicker layer of glue tend to stay on longer but may be harder to reuse.

If you plan to wear your nails for a short time, use double sided sticky tabs instead of nail glue. They make removal easier and help keep the nails in good condition for future use. Before reapplying, clean off any leftover glue and store the nails safely in their original box to maintain their shape and shine.

How to Apply Press-On Nails

Applying press-on nails is quick and easy when you follow a few simple steps. Here's how to get a long lasting, salon quality manicure at home:

1. Prep your natural nails
Start by trimming and lightly buffing your natural nails to ensure the glue adheres better. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, then wipe your nails with rubbing alcohol to remove any oils or residue.

2. Choose the right nail sizes
Lay out your press-on nails and match each one to your natural nails before glueing. If a nail doesn't fit perfectly, file the sides for a better match. "Make sure your nail sits just above your cuticle line if it's too big, it will lift more easily," explains nail expert Ann McFerran.

3. Apply nail glue
Work on one nail at a time. Apply a small drop of glue to both your natural nail and the press-on. Press firmly for 10, 15 seconds. It's better to use a bit too much glue than too little, as lack of glue can cause lifting just wipe off any excess with a paper towel.

4. Customize your look
If you're using clear press-ons, you can paint them with your favourite nail polish. Add a top coat for shine and extra durability.

5. Let them set
Avoid getting your hands wet for at least one hour after applying the product. This helps the glue fully cure and keeps your manicure lasting longer.
